An interesting group of plants available at the Trillium’s Courtyard Florist are Tillandsias, which are also known as air plants. These amazing and fun plants grow as epiphytes, which mean they grow without soil
attached to other plants. They absorb all of their moisture and nutrients through structures on their leaves called trichomes. The more trichomes, the more silvery and soft the plant will appear. Roots on tillandsia are only used for attaching themselves to a tree or plant. They come in all sizes and shapes, which makes them very fun to work with!
Another little known fact about these plants is that most Tillandsia will produce flowers, and subsequently baby Tillandsia, or pups. Flowers are typically brightly colored and long lasting, and some Tillandsia leaves will ‘blush’ a pinkish hue.
While they do not need soil, they still need a source of water and light. Occasional misting, depending on temperature and humidity is essential to keeping your air plant happy and healthy. Often it is dry indoors, so an occasional soaking of the plants is helpful. Complete care instructions are available at Trillium’s Courtyard Florist.
Tillandsia arrangements are as diverse as they are beautiful. They are a perfect gift, as suitable for an office or desk as much as they are a coffee table or counter. The possibilities are endless!
